'Private-room' gym becomes new normal in Japan

A private-room gym facility is becoming increasingly popular among gymgoers amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Tokyu Sports Oasis' Kamiooka gym in Konan Ward, Yokohama, has five private rooms equipped with treadmills and exercise bikes. Although the rooms have been there since the gym's opening in last July, the number of people using them in July this year was about four times greater than in January.

Each room is 2.5 meters deep and 1.8 meters wide. Images of a bamboo grove are projected onto the walls as users begin running, with the images moving in sync with their speed. Instructors also appear on the walls to give the runners advice on their pace.
