Private island up for sale for price of average UK home

A private island has come on the market, for around the same price as an average home in the UK.

During these coronavirus times many of us are itching to get away and the island would offer the perfect place to isolate with your loved ones.

The "unspoilt" 63.75 acre island, in Vaila Sound on the west side of the Shetland Isles, is on the market for offers over £250,000.

It is closer to Norway than Scotland, and is described as "a place of spectacular scenery and beauty with an abundance of wildlife".

The "scenic and sheltered" spot is close to the main island of Shetland, and has year-round access.

The island has two derelict cottages, with planning permission granted to rebuild them as well as to construct a new cottage.

It also has planning permission for the building of a pier, and a storage shed with reception area and new agricultural buildings.

A two-acre loch with a traditional watermill is also on the island.

Planning consent also includes a windmill and solar panels for power, septic tanks with reed beds for sewage and rainwater capture from the cottage and shed roofs to provide the fresh water supply making it ECO friendly and energy efficient.

Comparatively, a four-bedroom house in Childwall is on the market for £240,000.

For £190,000 a two-bedroom houseboat in Limehouse Basin, close to Canary Wharf, is also for sale.

Or for £240,000, a two-bedroom villa in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, could be purchased.
