Private hire drivers in trouble after Liverpool-Spurs match at Anfield

Three private drivers have found themselves in trouble after Liverpool's last-gasp win over Spurs on Sunday.

A packed Anfield celebrated wildly as an own goal from Toby Alderweireld gave the Reds a vital 2-1 win.

But it was a less good day for three private hire taxi drivers who ended up in trouble with the authorities after the match.

Issues with both private hire and hackney cab drivers have been reported previously during and after Liverpool matches at Anfield.

This has often related to some drivers charging exorbitant fares up front from unwitting football fans - many of whom have travelled into the city for games and been taken advantage of.

But the alleged offences on Saturday were of a different nature.

Liverpool City Council's licensing department took to twitter to share the results of Operation Topaz - a project aimed at clamping down on the dodgy behaviour of licensed drivers around football matches.

And it said that after running the operation at the Liverpool-Spurs match, three private hire drivers had been reported for prosecution for the alleged offence of illegally plying for hire.

This is an offence specific to private hire drivers, when they attempt to pick up fares straight from the street - rather than waiting to be booked through an operator.

More and more drivers have obtained licences in neighbouring boroughs like Sefton and Knowsley, but then travelled into Liverpool to pick up fares, without being booked, forcing Liverpool to crack down on the practice.

If you get into a private hire vehicle that you have not booked, you are not insured and this is illegal.

The tweet from the council's licensing department stated: "Operation Topaz today at LFC game resulted in 1 Sefton, 1 Knowsley and 1 Liverpool PHD (Private Hire Driver) reported for prosecution for illegally plying for hire."

The ECHO has been reporting for several years on the issues arising from some taxi and private hire drivers around Liverpool matches at Anfield.

This helped lead to the council launching new undercover operations on matchdays to try and catch drivers in the act.

Last summer, a black cab driver and a private hire driver were both ordered to pay hundreds of pounds after being found guilty of illegal practices including cherry picking and attempting to rip off Reds fans by charging extortionate fares before journeys.

Hackney cab driver Alan Duringer admitted cherry picking while Wirral-based private hire driver Musleh Uddin was caught plying for hire when he agreed to take two undercover officers to Lime Street for £20 despite the journey not being booked in advance.
