'Private' funeral to be held for Durham hiker Esther Dingley who was found dead in Pyrenees

A "small and private" funeral will be held for County Durham hiker Esther Dingley whose body was found in the Pyrenees.

Esther, a 37-year-old solo hiker from Durham, was discovered close to where a fragment of her skull was found two weeks ago.

It is thought Esther plunged down a steep slope from a point near the 2,300ft summit of the Pic de la Glere.

She had been walking in the mountains near the French and Spanish border when she went missing, and was last seen on November 22.

And after nine painful months of uncertainty, Esther was found among the mountains "she loved so much".

Once Esther is returned to the family, a small, private cremation will be held close to the Pyrenees before her ashes are scattered in a number of places closest to her heart.

Charity LBT Global said her partner Daniel Colgate, mum Ria, and her partner Terry are saddened by the passing of their beloved Esther.

In lieu of cards and flowers, the family asks that people consider a donation to the charity Sightsavers who work to tackle preventable blindness around the world.

This is a charity Esther long supported in line with her commitment to sharing the beauty of the planet.

A fundraising page, "Remembering Esther", has been set up which you can donate to here.

Messages will be read out at the service and can be left with a donation or sent directly to remembering@estheranddan.com

The family would also like to reiterate their gratitude for the work of the charity LBT Global who has done so much to handle the public attention these past nine months.
