Priti Patel wants to 'name and shame' middle-class cocaine users

Home secretary Priti Patel has vowed to crackdown on middle-class drug users in an attempt to stamp out recreational use of illegal substances.

Priti Patel wants police chiefs to “name and shame” business owners and wealthy users to change the perception that Class A drugs can be taken without consequence.

Officers ave also been instructed to target cocaine use at university campuses to drive home the message, with focus on freshers’ week activities.

The drive is intended to seek out “high-value individuals”, arresting “those who see drugs as a part of their lifestyle and don’t believe that there will be any ramifications.

A Home Office official claimed there could be high-profile arrests in the campaign to tackle the class A drug trade, gang conflict and violent crime.

The Government policy document stated the aim would be to “crack down on recreational drug use and ensure those who break the law face consequences”.

A Home Office source told The Times: “One of the issues is that they don’t think they will ever get punished, that there’s no realistic prospect of the police pursuing them,”

“This is a drive to make sure that people are being punished and others realise it. There will be high-profile arrests. We want to make examples of people who are held in high esteem but are fuelling ongoing crime and murders linked to the drug trade.”
