'Priti Patel’s plan to dump asylum seekers in Rwanda would be a stain on our nation'

Britain’s plan to dump asylum seekers in Rwanda would be an indelible stain on our reputation as a civilised nation.

Nobody disputes we need a system to secure our borders and tackle people smugglers.

But Home Secretary Priti Patel’s proposal to send refugees to Africa is appalling.

Instead of considering camps in Rwanda, the Government must devise internationally acceptable methods to decide and control who enters Britain.

This is a country built on centuries of migration – today’s asylum seekers contain the doctors and engineers of tomorrow.

Instead of inflating the issue, Patel should be honest and look for home-grown answers.

Our reputation globally will be devalued and our communities divided if her shameful plan is ever implemented.

Drained of humanity and forever blowing dog whistles, this Conservative Government is poisoning our politics to divide and rule.

Let’s get behind England, cheering the boys in homes and pubs, dreaming of success so football really does come home (Newcastle Chronicle)

Cheer we go

If England beat Germany tonight many will celebrate a great victory by Gareth Southgate’s young men who represent a gloriously diverse and vibrant nation.

But if we lose at the Euros, particularly on penalties against our old sporting adversary, spirits will undoubtedly drop.

As we saw in Wales and Scotland until both were knocked out, football is a sport with a rare ability to make us happy… or sad.

So let’s get behind England, cheering the boys in homes and pubs, dreaming of success so football really does come home.

Southgate’s spirited Three Lions will still be a credit to England, win or lose.

One of the best

Warm tributes from stars and politicians to Pride of Britain creator and former Daily Mirror editor Peter Willis show the respect felt for an exceptional journalist.

Gone far too soon, we send our deepest condolences to his grieving family and friends as we all mourn the passing of a lovely man.
