Priti Patel's dream of falling immigration will happen, but not for the reasons she thinks

Priti Patel says a Conservative government will cut immigration. For once, this promise — wheeled out by the Tories at every election — could actually come true.

Not because of the extra grip the Home Office will have on our borders, but because the economy is likely to be hit hard by the Brexit Boris Johnson is pursuing.

Foreign workers won’t come here because there will be better employment prospects elsewhere.

Is that a victory? Hardly.

The number of immigrants moving to Spain fell from 920,000 in 2007 to 307,000 during its sovereign debt crisis in 2010.

I don’t recall Spanish MPs bragging about it.
