Priti Patel 'lobbied against' plans for almost 150 affordable homes in her seat

Home Secretary Priti Patel lobbied against plans that would have seen almost 150 affordable homes built in her constituency, according to reports.

Ms Patel made representations to housing secretary Robert Jenrick twice this year to oppose plans in her constituency of Witham in Essex, according to the Sunday Times.

It comes despite repeated pledges by Tory ministers, including Prime Minister, to "build, build, build" to affordable homes across the UK.

As part of that plan ministers are consulting on reforms that would deprive local people of the ability to oppose planned developments.

According to the paper. Ms Patel opposed at least four developments, which would have provided 141 affordable homes.

Ms Patel wrote to the chief executive of the Tory-led Colchester council on October 7 about a proposal to build eight “A-rated fossil-fuel-free homes” in Copford, a village in her constituency with a population of about 1,700.

She also helped opponents of plans to restore a “derelict” grade II listed building and convert it and a stable into 37 homes.

A 200-home development in Tiptree was “called in” by Mr Jenrick this year.

It would have provided 60 affordable homes.

According to the Sunday Times, Ms Patel forwarded more than a dozen objections and “made representations”, but the scheme was approved on April 7.

A fourth project, to build 255 homes, 77 of them affordable, also in Tiptree, was rejected by a government housing inspector.

A report dated August 18 listed Ms Patel as an “interested party” and showed her submitting two letters that were reviewed by the inspector.

Shadow Housing Secretary Steve Reed said: “We can’t have Nimbies in a government which is going to rob people of control of their own communities.”

A spokesman for Priti Patel’s office told the Mirror: “As a local member of parliament Priti makes representations on behalf of constituents who have raised comments opposing and supporting planning applications so they can be considered during the process.

“Priti supports sustainable and sensible local developments including new housing, new health and education facilities and new infrastructure.”
