Priti Patel accused of bypassing MPs to force though new 'draconian' police powers

Priti Patel has been accused of bypassing MPs to force through new “draconian” police powers.

The Home Secretary added 18 pages of last-gasp changes to her Police, Crime and Sentencing Bill.

Moves to widen stop and-search powers – without suspicion – and ban individuals from demos will be introduced in the Lords in an unusual Parliamentary procedure, dodging MPs’ scrutiny.

Lib Dem peer and former Met Police officer Lord Paddick said: “Outrageously, Priti Patel has introduced reckless, draconian laws which have not been debated by MPs.

“These amendments would target innocent climate protesters, ban people from demonstrations and hand the police far-reaching powers they have not asked for.”

Labour and Lib Dem peers need rebel Tory support to block the plans.

Home Office Minister Baroness Williams said the measures were needed “to protect the public from unacceptable levels of disruption” by protesters.
