Prithvi Shaw responds to being dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad

Prithvi Shaw shared a four-word message on his Instagram after being omitted from the Mumbai squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura, which is due to be played from October 26 at the MBB Stadium, for being overweight.

Although Mumbai have not provided an official explanation for his exclusion, Times of India reported that he's been given a "break" to work on his fitness.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, he remarked, "Need a break thx," accompanied by a smiling emoji.

Shaw has reportedly been advised to undergo a two-week fitness program created by trainers from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

The 23-year-old scored 4, 76 in the Irani Cup, 7, 12 in Mumbai's 84-run defeat in the Ranji Trophy to Baroda in Vadodara, and 1, 39 not out in Mumbai's nine-wicket win over Maharashtra in their second match at the MCA ground in BKC.

He was part of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup-winning sides and played for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Northamptonshire in English County.

Despite his talent, Shaw's career has faced challenges due to off-field issues and injuries. He has the distinction of being one of the only players, alongside Sachin Tendulkar, to score centuries in both the Ranji and Duleep Trophy debuts, and he became the youngest Indian to score a hundred on his Test debut.

However, his form has dipped significantly since, and he hasn’t played a Test since October 2018. Although he has received a few call-ups, he’s never made it to the playing XI.

Shaw has been a regular with the Delhi Capitals, but his inconsistency has led to being benched for several games in the 2024 season, prompting expectations that DC will not retain him.
