Prisoners' Sunday roast slammed as 'privilege' but others say it's punishment enough

Footage of prisoners showing off their Sunday roast has sparked a debate about whether they are lucky or paying the price.

The video captured by a Liverpool man in an unknown prison shows the Sunday roast options on offer to the prisoners.

In the video, the man with the phone pans across a trolley of hot plates, describing all the grub up for grabs.

The prisoners are shown to have a choice between roast chicken or beef, with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and there is also a vegetarian option.

One prisoner describes the chicken on offer as "pigeon" while another also mocks the food that other inmates had cooked for them.

However, the video sparked heated debate among ECHO readers over whether it was right that prisoners received a meal like this.

Many people highlighted that homeless people and those on low incomes would not be able to have a regular Sunday roast.

Jan Cropper said: "We have hard working families who are hungry! They are lucky to get anything as far as I'm concerned!"

Barbara Mullings wrote: "Commit a crime and you get roast beef. That's expensive for a family of four. That's a special occasion for us."

Jean Kennedy said: "All that food and a roof over their head's is more than what homeless people have so stop complaining. You're not paying for that privilege, the taxpayers are."

However, not everyone saw the roast dinner as a luxury with some readers taking a different view.

Others pointed out that the food looked unappetizing and that it was hardly 'Toby Carvery quality'.

Paul Dewsnip wrote: "If you think this is 'good food' you need to get out more."

Annemarie Rendell said: "Let's be honest, it looks rank. The meat is cheap and nasty and the spuds are frozen. It's hardly Toby Carvery standard."

Some readers even went as far as calling the food was punishment in itself.

Val Simm said: "What a shame. They wouldn't have to eat that if they were law abiding citizens. Some people cannot afford even any type of dinner."

Teresa O'Connell wrote: "It looks disgusting, frozen spuds, rubber beef and pigeon legs. People think who think this is too lush for them need to get a grip".

There were also readers who took issue with the idea that prisoners were completely undeserving of a roast.

Keith Leahey said: "Shock horror, prisoners are actually fed. Who would have thought it?"

Christina Maher said: "They are still humans and have to eat like any other human being. They have human rights. Not all prison inmates are bad people."

Sue Li wrote: "Yeah, we live in a society that doesn't starve people to death!"
