The three prisoners who spent the night on the roof of Mountjoy have since been taken down safely.
The prison has now launched an investigation after four men managed to gain access to the top of the building where they held a protest over visitation rights.
An expert team of negotiators engaged with the men and one came down while the other three remained until around 8am this morning.
The Director General has praised the staff involved for managing to resolve the stand-off safely.
A spokesman said an investigation into how the men managed to get out has now got underway.
He said: "The Irish Prison Service can confirm at approximately 8.00am this morning the 3 prisoners who remained on a roof overnight in Mountjoy Prison have been successfully and safely removed by specially trained staff.
"The Director General has commended all the staff involved in ensuring that this incident was successfully resolved.
"Mountjoy Senior Management have commenced an investigation into the incident."
