Prisoners lose record 10-gallon hooch stash as guards confiscate Christmas haul

Prisoners have been hit by sobering news after a record haul of Christmas hooch was confiscated.

Guards found 10 gallons of grog – enough to fill 67 standard-sized spirits bottles.

The booze at Wayland jail was described as “much higher proof” than whisky or gin.

A source said: “This is the biggest single find in any UK jail. They must have spent months getting it ready.

“The men will be gutted. Now they’ll have to get through Christmas telly sober.”

The find will bring back memories of the classic 1976 Porridge Christmas special in which Fletcher and Godber – played by Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale - were caught making wine.

Guards discovered the super-strong brew at the Category C jail in Thetford, Norfolk. Hooch is a fermented mix of fruit, water, sugar and bread.

Finds have tripled in three years as some inmates have ditched unpredictable drugs like Spice.

The Prison Service said: “We have ramped up cell searches to clamp down on illicitly brewed alcohol.”
