Prisoners freed as part of efforts to control virus

Sixty prisoners were released early from prisons in Forth Valley due to emergency Covid-19 legislation.

The prisoners were released over three phases from May 6.
Seven prisoners behind bars in Scottish jails were released back into the Stirling area.

The measures were passed by the Scottish Parliament in April to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in prisons.

Cornton Vale released nine prisoners early, Glenochil 20 and Polmont 31.

The last group were released in the final phase of the scheme from May 26 to June 1.

The scheme allows more single cell occupancy to keep prisoners and staff safe.

It was limited to prisoners who had around 90 days left of their short sentence. Prisoners sentenced to more than 18 months were not eligible.

The Scottish Prison Service said 348 prisoners were allowed out but 63 had their release overruled by governors.

None of those eligible for release had Covid-19 symptoms when they were assessed.

The SPS said 10 per cent of its workforce is absent due to Covid-19; 442 staff are absent but only 15 are symptomatic. The rest are self-isolating, shielding or caring for family members.

On Monday SPS said there were seven prisoners self-isolating across three of its prisons and there no confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Scottish jails.
