Prisoners' Christmas meals as jails share menus with full breakfasts and turkey dinner

Prisoners are set to enjoy a full Christmas dinner and a range of games, jail chiefs have revealed.

This year's menus from Scotland's prisons include full fried breakfasts, turkey and all the trimmings, burgers, steak pie and omelettes along with vegetarian and Halal options.

Inmates at some institutions will also be able to take part in a variety of activities, the Daily Record reports.

In the country's biggest prison, HMP Barlinnie in Riddrie, Glasgow, staff will serve up a lunch of traditional turkey, rich cranberry gravy, chipolata sausages, roast and creamed potatoes, Brussels sprouts and carrots.

At HMP Shotts, Lanarkshire, where some of Scotland's most notorious criminals are housed, Weetabix and fruit yoghurt will be dished out for breakfast on Christmas Day.

That will be followed by lentil broth and roast chicken broth served with potatoes, carrots and sprouts before being finished with apple and plum tart.

And on New Year's Day dinner prisoners will be served rolls and lorne sausage and potato scone for lunch.

They will then tuck into braised beef steak with chasseur sauce for dinner followed by chocolate fudge cake for pudding.

Activities on offer include benchpress, treadmill and cycling challenges with a £10 prize on offer for the winner.

Barlinnie inmates will be given the chance to win cash prizes in a quiz while they can also take part in festive snooker, table tennis, bingo and bowls competitions.

The prisoners will also get Christmas pudding with a creamy rum sauce for dessert and are expected to receive 4oz beef burgers with cheese for dinner.

Options for vegetarians include a nut roast and a falafel and spinach quarter pounder while those on a Halal diet will get lamb curry with basmati rice.

And on New Year's Day, prisoners will enjoy homemade steak pie and all the trimmings or a mushroom and stilton wellington for lunch.

They will then be served Chinese king ribs for dinner along with Twix bars and mince pies.

Meanwhile at HMP Polmont, near Falkirk, some of the country's youngest inmates will be served a fried breakfast on the big day.

They will then tuck into turkey and all the trimmings for lunch and be given bottles of Irn Bru and selection boxes.

On New Year's Day, they will be served steak pie and Scotch trifle.

Activities being provided by jail bosses include festive quizzes, bingo and art competitions.

Inmates at HMP Edinburgh, HMP Inverness, HMP Perth and HMP Low Moss will all get full turkey dinners on Christmas Day.

At HMP Grampian, prisoners will be able to design their own Christmas jumpers and write their own Christmas songs with sweets and toiletries on offer.

Meanwhile at HMP Low Moss, Christmas parties will be held with appearances from Santa along with a festive panto for prisoners and their visitors.

The Scottish Prison Service was approached for comment.
