Prisoner with phone in socks can't pull wool over the eyes of jail staff

A prisoner's plan to conceal banned items in jail was far from foolproof. Dauud Osman simply stuffed an iPhone down one of his socks and a phone charger down the other.

Bristol Crown Court was told he was easily spotted with the items in a corridor at HMP Bristol. He told prison staff it was a "communal" phone which he was using to speak to his family.

Osman, 26, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to having a prohibited article in prison in January. Judge Keith Cutler gave him a 24-month community order, with up to 50 days' rehabilitation, and ordered that the phone be forfeited.

The judge told Osman: "You have pleaded guilty and since your release you have been behaving and doing everything right under your licence conditions.

"You have many years left of life. Make something of if."

Emily Heggadon, prosecuting, said at the time of the offence Osman was remanded in custody for a drug offence. In April he was sentenced to 18 months' jail but has since been released owing to time served on remand.

Miss Heggadon added that there was no assertion Osman used the phone for criminal purposes. She said the maximum penalty for the offence was two years' custody.

Joanna Hooper, defending, said her client had been on licence in Cornwall, was doing well and aspired to train as an electrician. She said he was clean of drugs.

Miss Hooper told the court: "He has engaged. He has not reoffended."
