Prisoner who 'wanted to go to jail for a long time' refuses to appear in front of judge

A man due to be sentenced for disorder at a Bristol shop said he wanted to go to prison for as long as possible, a court heard.

Stephen Priddis, 42, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and possessing an uncapped hypodermic syringe at Mccoll's in Four Acres, Bishopsworth, on May 17.

He was due to learn his fate today (June 17, 2021) but declined to attend Bristol Crown Court either in person or via video link from HMP Bristol.

Diane Heys, defending, said: "He said he wanted to go to prison and he wanted to go to prison for a long time.

"He has refused to see the Probation Service. He has refused to attend in all forms today."

Judge Euan Ambrose said the case was not complicated and Priddis could be sentenced in his absence and told the result.

But the judge adjourned sentence until June 24, with a proviso that Priddis attend via video link on that day.

Judge Ambrose said: "If he refuses again the chances of proceeding in his absence are increasing."
