Prisoner who tortured young man caused damage to Perth Prison roof after experiencing 'cabin fever'

A long-term prisoner had two months added to his sentence after “cabin fever” led to him causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the roof at Perth ’s maximum security jail.

Thirty-year-old James Faulds had a lifelong restriction order imposed at Glasgow High Court in 2011 for torturing a vulnerable young man over a £60 debt.

He was ordered to serve a minimum of three years and eight months behind bars.

But Lord Bracadale told him he could be detained “for the rest of his life.”

Perth Sheriff Court heard that Faulds was in the exercise yard at the Edinburgh Road jail when he jumped up and removed part of the metal roof cladding.

Depute fiscal Lisa Marshall said the cost of the damage totalled £868.46.

The accused had been in the prison’s separation and re-integration unit yard but had refused to leave when asked to do so.

The accused admitted maliciously damaging the roof at the prison on August 18 last year.

A solicitor for the accused said that “no release date” had been attached to the order.

“He has been segregated for well over 10 months, since February of this year.

“He had cabin fever and accepts he just lost it.

“It was too much for him. He jumped up and pulled off the cladding.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff Alison Michie told Faulds: “You have admitted causing over £800 damage while in the prison.

“There doesn’t appear to be any particular reason why you have done this, other than some sort of frustration.

“There’s very little option given your present state.”

Faulds and a co-accused admitted attacking Andrew Allan at his flat in Ayr, blindfolding him and holding his head under water.
