A prisoner who killed a fellow inmate with one hit at a young offenders' institution has had his sentence increased by more than double following a Court of Appeal hearing.
According to Birmingham Live, Abdi Rehman Esa attacked John Smith at an establishment in Featherstone, Wakeford on December 5 last 2020.
The 26-year-old was taken to a hospital in Wolverhampton and then on to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he died the next day.
An investigation conducted by police officers revealed that 21-year-old Esa had whacked his victim once, resulting in brutal injuries.
Esa pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter and had his sentence upped to a further two year and seven months - with a further 10 months on extended license - at Stafford Crown Court on April 21.
However the sentence was formally challenged and referred to the Attorney General.
Esa’s original sentence was quashed at a hearing on Friday, June 25, and increased to six years in prison, with a further four years on extended license.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Lyford, the senior investigating officer, said: “This brings to an end proceeding in an extremely emotive and difficult investigation.
“Three Honourable Justices at the Court of Appeal reviewed the original sentence handed down to Abdi Esa following a referral from the Attorney General after concerns it was unduly lenient.
“My thoughts remain with John’s family and while no sentence can ever bring John back, I hope the conclusion of proceedings will at least allow them to attempt to move forward with their lives.”
