Prisoner who escaped from Canberra Hospital sent back after weeks on the run

A man who escaped custody at the Canberra Hospital earlier this month has been sent back there for a mental health assessment.

Aaron Jones, 33, was caught by police late on Tuesday afternoon after two weeks on the run.

He was initially in hospital for mental health treatment after he was taken into custody for breaching a domestic violence order.

Today, the ACT Magistrates Court heard he stacked up chairs in a courtyard to escape.

Mental health officers urged that Jones be returned to hospital for immediate treatment before he is sent back to jail.

Extra security will be arranged.

He is the second prisoner to escape from the hospital this month.

A man was arrested in southern NSW after escaping police custody at the facility.

The ACT corrections system has seen six men evade custody in the past 18 months. Three of them were being treated at Canberra Hospital at the time.
