Prisoner 'stabbed inmate in face with shank' at HMP Altcourse

A prisoner is accused of stabbing another inmate in the face with a 'shank' at HMP Altcourse.

Levere Hinds, 59, is alleged to have attacked a man called Darren Michael in a cell at the Fazakerley jail.

Hinds, of Chester Street, Birkenhead, was charged after an incident at the G4S-run prison on April 5 last year.

The attack is said to have taken place on the Beechers wing of the Category B men's jail, at around 4pm.

Liverpool Crown Court heard Hinds, formerly of Lathom Road in Bootle, denies a charge of unlawful wounding against Michael.

He also denies unauthorised possession in prison of a blade or offensive weapon, namely "a sharpened wooden implement".

Hinds was not present in court and Anthony Rose, defending, said this was because he had been in self-isolation at the jail.

Alaric Walmsley, prosecuting, said a trial, estimated to last two to three days, had to be fixed.

Judge Neil Flewitt, QC, said Hinds' trial would take place on the week commencing October 19 this year.
