Prisoner set for trial over jail murder of fellow inmate at Scots nick

A prisoner is due to face trial over claims he murdered another inmate in a Scottish jail.

James O'Rourke - who is said to have strangled Dean Ramsay at Glenochil Prison, in Alloa, Clackmannanshire - made a second court appearance in connection with his death today (FRI).

Prosecutors claim O'Rourke, 50, did "tie a ligature round his neck and compress his neck" during an incident at the nick on Saturday, January 9 this year.

Ramsay, 30, was found injured following the alleged attack and was rushed to the Forth Valley Royal Hospital, in Larbert.

He died two days after the alleged attack, leading to Police Scotland launching a murder probe.

O'Rourke and fellow inmate Peter Allan were arrested in connection with the death.

In hearings at Falkirk Sheriff Court last week, they both made no plea to the single charge of murder and were remanded in custody as the case was continued for prosecutors to investigate further.

Today a second hearing took place for O'Rourke, whose address was given as The Scottish Prison Service, in Alloa.

He again made no plea and was remanded in custody - after being fully committed for trial.

Defence solicitor Eamonn McGeehan was due to appear on behalf of Allan.

But Allan, 31, was liberated in connection with the case without a second hearing taking place.

No future court dates have been set, but O'Rourke is expected to go on trial in due course, subject to delays to the justice system caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
