Prisoner apologises to paedophile inmate he slashed in the face with razor

A prisoner who slashed a paedophile with a razor blade said the attack had led to him turning his life around.

Daniel Andrews left Jordan Murray with a 15cm wound to his cheek following the bloody incident.

Addressing a judge on Friday, the 28-year-old said he was "deeply ashamed" of his actions.

Andrews was on the medical wing at HMP Altcourse when he used his razor to slice Murray's cheek in December 2019.

The attack came just moments after Murray had revealed he had convictions for sexual offences against children.

When asked why he carried out the attack, Andrews told a prison officer: "He's got two victims, think of them."

The dad-of-one attended his sentencing hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday via video link from HMP Nottingham.

He had wanted to be in court to learn his fate, but logistical issues prevented this.

After Peter Killen, prosecuting, provided an overview of the attack, Andrews addressed Judge David Swinnerton, QC.

He said: "I just want to say that I am genuinely deeply ashamed of what I have done and I am very sorry to Jordan and his family for putting him through what I put him through."

He added the offence had led to a change in him and that he was now in the longest period he had gone through without being in trouble for a significant time.

This point was stressed by Peter Eguae, defending Andrews, who said his client had made huge progress during his most recent jail stint.

Mr Eguae added: "He never realised when he assaulted the victim how serious it would be and he has quite honestly and credibly expressed his shock, his shame and his disgust at his actions."

The court heard Andrews had endured a difficult childhood in the care system and amassed 39 convictions for 75 offences, many of which were for assault.

The Altcourse attack took place while he was serving a five year and 10 month sentence for offences that included possession of a disguised firearm and common assault.

The crimes related to him using a Taser on a man in the South Shields area of the North East and, in a separate attack, grabbing, hitting, pushing, spitting and biting a woman in a hotel. He also tried to set fire to her hair.

Both incidents took place in 2017, the same year he had pet dog Demon removed from his possession because it was a banned breed.

When Daniels, who claimed he had taught the dog to bite, appeared in court to face a charge of possessing a fighting dog, chaos ensued.

He threatened to kill a police dog in retaliation and fought security in the dock, shouting: “I’m going to f***** smash your face in!”

After listening to Andrews' address, Judge Swinnerton said that, if the Altcourse attack had led to him turning his life around then "at least some good will come out of this".

However, he concluded that Andrews was a dangerous offender and said the attack was "a sudden, impulsive, decision" in which: "You caused an injury which is visibly horrific. It is a very long, deep gash to the side of his face. The picture of this taken shortly afterwards is horrific. The effect of this is he has been left with permanent scarring to his face."

Andrews was sentenced to seven and a half years in jail and handed a five year extended sentence.

This means he will serve at least two thirds of the jail term before he can be considered for parole. Once released, he will be subject to licence conditions for any time that remains of his custodial sentence, plus a further five years.
