Prisoner released in 'very rare' mistake before sentencing for knife crime

A remand prisoner did not get his sentence for having a knife as a prison let him go before the hearing.

Jason Weyman, 43, of Thicket Avenue in Speedwell, was due to be dealt with today (August 20, 2020) after admitting possessing a blade.

But Bristol Crown Court heard he was released from HMP Bristol on August 12 when confirmation was received that he was acquitted of other matters.

Alistair Haggerty, prosecuting, told the court: "They should not have released him until this case has been dealt with and they did."

Judge Michael Longman said: "The governor ought to be notified that this has happened."

The judge asked that the governor explain in writing what happened.

Catherine Spedding, defending, requested an adjournment in order for her client to be written to and informed of a future sentencing date.

The judge adjourned the case until September 1.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Releases in error are very rare but we take them extremely seriously.

"The police have been informed.”
