Prisoner refuses to attend court for sentence as finds jail a 'comfort'

A prisoner was so comfortable in jail he declined to come to court to be sentenced.

Jason Martin was due to be dealt with for assaults on emergency workers.

But the 32-year-old, of Stapleton Road in Eastville, didn't attend from HMP Bristol.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC told Bristol Crown Court: "The defendant has refused to leave his cell.

"He pleaded guilty to the charges of assaults on emergency workers.

"We have a pre-sentence report and a psychiatric report."

'Security in custody appears to be a comfort to him'

The judge asked the court if there was any reason why sentence should not be imposed in Martin's absence.

Nicholas Lee, defending, said: "Mr Martin has a troubled past.

"He has drug-induced disorders and is a vulnerable individual.

"Security in custody appears to be a comfort to him."

Mr Lee applied for a short adjournment to enable Martin to be sentenced at a later date via video link.

Mr Lee added: "He has a desire to stay where he is.

"There are matters I would like to take instructions from him on."

The judge adjourned sentence to 10am on May 27, when Martin can appear via video link.
