Police are warning people not to approach a man who's escaped from prison in central Australia. (AAP)

A prisoner has escaped from a Northern Territory goal.

Alek Brumby, 30, fled the Alice Springs Correctional Centre late Sunday, NT Police said Monday.

He's not considered dangerous but the public are warned not to approach him and instead, call police.

Brumby is 168cm tall, with black hair and medium build.

He was last seen wearing a yellow shirt.

The Alice Springs Correctional Centre holds prisoners of all security levels with a focus on rehabilitation and reintegration.

The prison is 25km south of the town on the Stuart Highway.
