An investigation is under way after a 23-year-old inmate at Lithgow’s maximum security prison suffered a serious puncture wound to his neck in a prison fight.
The fight, involving five prisoners, broke out at the central New South Wales jail on Saturday morning. One prisoner was seriously injured in what appears to be a stabbing.
A spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW said in a statement: “Shortly before 11am (14 November 2015) officers broke up an altercation between five inmates in the accommodation area.
“As a result one inmate suffered a puncture wound to his neck, believed to have been caused by a jail-made implement.”
The man was airlifted to Westmead hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
The spokeswoman said four inmates were segregated and police attended the centre, but no charges had yet been laid.
The Lithgow prison facility faced unrest in September this year, when a fire was lit during a disturbance involving over 30 prisoners. Guards at the centre used tear gas to disperse the inmates.
