A man has died behind bars at a Scots young offenders institute.

Scottish Prison Service bosses have announced the death of Jack McKenzie at Her Majesty's Young Offender's Institute Polmont near Brightons in the Falkirk area.

The 20-year-old died on September 3 after being remanded at Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier this year.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry will now be carried out into the cause of his death.

Polmont holds young offenders aged between 16 and 21.

A statement issued today by the Scottish Prison Service read: "Jack McKenzie, 20, a prisoner from HMYOI Polmont has died on 3 September 2021.

"He was remanded at Glasgow and Strathkelvin Sheriff Court in 2021.

"Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
