Prisoner dies in assault at Townsville jail

The inmate was found unconscious at Townsville Correctional Centre this morning.

A prisoner has died after an assault involving another inmate at the Townsville Correctional Centre this morning.

A Queensland Corrective Services spokesman confirmed staff found the prisoner unconscious just before 11:00am.

The victim, a 48-year-old man, could not be resuscitated.

A 41-year-old man is currently assisting police with inquiries.

Authorities are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit will travel from Brisbane to Townsville to assist with the investigation.
