Prisoner dies from 'Covid-related illness' in Nottinghamshire

A prisoner from HMP Lowdham Grange has died from a Covid-19 related illness.

Almost 1,400 people were tested for Covid-19 following an outbreak of the virus inside the male category B prison at the start of October.

The people being tested included both staff members and inmates after 84 cases of coronavirus were confirmed inside the jail.

These positive tests were 63 prisoners and a further 21 staff.

Prison bosses said since the start of October there has been a "significant" decrease in cases of the virus with visits to the prison suspended as a result.

But the prison has now confirmed that a 56-year-old prisoner has died. His name has not yet been released.

Mark Hanson, Serco's prison director at HMP Lowdham Grange, said: "I can confirm that sadly a 56-year-old prisoner from HMP Lowdham Grange died in hospital last month from a Covid-19 related illness.

"As with all deaths in custody, this will be subject to both a prison and probation ombudsman and HM coroners investigation.

"There have been no other fatalities from the recent outbreak and there are now no more remaining cases of Covid-19 at the prison, with no positive tests amongst the prisoners or officers for the last 20 days.

"We have been able to increase the amount of out-of-cell time and hope to open up other elements of the regime this week."
