Kingsdown man dies one week into prison sentence at HMP Bristol

A Kingsdown man has died one week after starting a jail term at HMP Bristol.

Simon Penny's sudden death at the Horfield prison on September 11 is not being treated as suspicious, according to police.

The 35-year-old was living on Jamaica Street before he was sentenced to 14 weeks in jail at North Somerset Magistrates' Court on September 4.

He was jailed after admitting he possessed 27.5g of a Class B synthetic cannabinoid at Weston-super-Mare railway station on February 18.

Mr Penny was carrying green herbal material with indications of the psychoactive substance fluoro-MDMB-PICA.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a £115 victim surcharge and activated a suspended eight-week prison sentence for a shoplifting offence he committed on March 7 last year.

The total length of the jail term imposed on September 4 was 14 weeks.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Police are preparing a report for the coroner into the sudden death of a prisoner at HMP Bristol on September 11, 2019."

A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman added: "HMP Bristol prisoner Simon Penny died in prison on September 11 and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

Police are also investigating an alleged attack at the prison yesterday (September 17). An inmate was rushed to hospital following an incident, with unconfirmed reports suggesting the prisoner may have been stabbed.

He was said to be in a 'stable condition'.
