A man who was given a life sentence 23 years ago and recalled to prison in 2015 has died in jail.

Joseph Allan, 47, was originally convicted at the High Court in Glasgow in 1998.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) confirmed that he died in custody at HMP Addiewell, West Lothian, on September 5.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry is set to be held.

A statement on the SPS website said: “Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course.”
