'Prisoner' complains about 'appalling' food reportedly served behind bars during coronavirus lockdown

A video which it is claimed shows a meal given to a prisoner during the coronavirus lockdown has emerged.

Former prisoner and prison reform campaigner Cody Lachey told the ECHO he was sent the video from an inmate who was appalled at the quality and amount of food he had apparently been given.

In the video, which is understood to have been filmed at HMP Ford, the prisoner claims one allocation of food is meant to last him all day, rather than meals being served throughout the day.

Ministry of Justice officials are investigating the footage, though they claim it may not have been filmed in a prison - but Mr Lachey says he is convinced it is genuine.

The video shows the food reportedly given to the "prisoner" - including a potato, three sausages, a bun, two eggs and some crisps.

Mr Lachey said: “Prison food is appalling at the best of times, but here they’ve been given food you wouldn't give your dog.

“That brown thing [in the video] is supposed to be a potato, I've never seen anything like it, it looks disgusting.

“The facts are it's not good enough, prisoners should be getting three meals a day.”

In the footage, which was reportedly captured on a mobile phone by a prisoner, the "inmate" can be heard complaining about the food while filming his meal.

He says: “Now this is what we’ve been given for food for the whole day.”

He added: “That is to get a prisoner through to the next day, (they are) like child size portions. Look at the state of the drink.”

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We are investigating this video but is unclear that this footage was even taken in a prison, let alone a prison in England or Wales.”
