Prisoner chef who poured boiling oil over a colleague's head in a 'barbaric' act has died

A chef who was jailed for nine years after pouring boiling oil over a colleague has died.

Hung Hoang, 58, who was serving his sentence at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, died at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on January 23.

Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers gave the cause of death as cardiac failure due to sepsis.

Hoang, a Vietnamese national, of no fixed address, was also suffering from cirrhosis of the liver.

Opening an inquest in Ruthin, John Gittins, coroner for North Wales East and Central, said that although it was a natural cause of death, an inquest was mandatory because Hoang was in custody at the time.

In March, 2019, Hoang pleaded guilty at Chester Crown Court to causing grievous bodily harm to a co-worker at the Beijing City Takeaway in Congleton, in July, 2018.

The court heard Hoang poured about four litres of the boiling oil over his head, chest and arm.

The victim almost died and had to be placed in an induced coma for four weeks.

Hoang was arrested in Birmingham and told police that he had been scared during an argument.

On Hoang's sentencing, Detective Sergeant Simon Mills, of Chesire Police, described what he'd done as "truly barbaric, like something out of the Middle Ages".
