Prisoner brought down from roof of HMP Northumberland after six-hour stand-off

A prisoner climbed onto a roof at HMP Northumberland on Thursday for a stand-off lasting several hours.

ChronicleLive understands a man scaled one of the buildings at the Acklington jail between 3 and 4pm on Thursday afternoon.

It's believed he remained on top of the building until around 10pm that night.

Samantha Pariser, director at HMP Northumberland, said: “We can confirm that a single resident was involved in an incident at height yesterday.

"The situation was resolved peacefully and safely yesterday evening by our staff. Although not needed, support was onsite from other agencies as a precaution.”

The disruption comes the week after coronavirus re-entered the privately-run prison. On October 19, bosses confirmed that one person inside had tested positive for the disease,

By Monday this week, the Category C jail had imposed tighter restrictions on inmates in two of its 16 blocks in an effort to contain the virus.

Managers said the move had been taken after an outbreak involving a "very small number" of cases. Those living in the blocks have had social visits suspended and managers have "extend[ed] general use of PPE".

It's understood the inmate involved in Thursday's incident was not a resident of either of the two blocks currently under enhanced restrictions.

Asked for an update on the current coronavirus situation inside the prison, an HMP Northumberland spokesperson said: “We are continuing to implement the actions agreed with Public Health England.”
