Prisoner at Glasgow's HMP Barlinnie dies after being remanded in custody

A Fatal Accident Inquiry is to be held after a prisoner died at HMP Barlinnie.

Brian Cathcart, 47, passed away at the prison in the Riddrie area of Glasgow on Tuesday, December 7.

He had previously been remanded at Glasgow Sheriff Court in 2021.

The Scottish Prison Service have advised Police Scotland about the death and the matter has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal, the Daily Record reports.

A statement from the Scottish Prison Service said: "Brian Cathcart, 47, a prisoner from HMP Barlinnie has died on 7 December 2021.

"He was remanded at Glasgow & Strathkelvin Sheriff Court in 2021. Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
