Prisoner 26947 at Auschwitz concentration camp - picture of the day

Prisoner 26947 at Auschwitz concentration camp, a picture taken by Wilhelm Brasse
Wilhelm Brasse, a Polish prisoner at Auschwitz, was made to work as a photographer after camp administrators learned that he had been a professional photographer before the war. He photographed thousands of inmates for identity records as well as documenting medical experimentation on the prisoners. Brasse's work remains one of very few photographic records surviving of the camp. After the war, he was too haunted by his experiences to work as a photographer again. He died on Tuesday Illustration: Wilhelm Brass/Auschwitz Museum/AP
