Prisoner, 26, found dead at HMP Liverpool

A 26-year-old prisoner has been found dead at HMP Liverpool.

The body of Al-Yasa Hamza Abdussalaam was found at the prison yesterday morning, authorities have confirmed.

The ECHO understands the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Confirming the death, the Ministry of Justice said they had referred the matter to watchdog The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

A file will now be sent to the coroner.

Pia Sinha, Governor of HMP Liverpool, has overseen a transformation of the regime at the prison in response to a damning inspection report in 2017.

An inspection report earlier this year cited many improvements in conditions and culture at the prison.

A Prison Service spokesperson said to the ECHO: “HMP Liverpool prisoner Al-Yasa Hamza Abdussalaam died on 1 August and our condolences are with his family and friends.

“The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
