Prison term for man who threw boiling water at custody officer in Nottingham Prison

A prison officer is to get £100 compensation after being blistered by boiling water with sugar in it.

The incident took place when 25-year-old John Fraser was in the segregation unit of Nottingham Prison, a court heard.

He had just been visited by a governor who declined to say how long he would be detained in the special section on September 22.

Fraser had just been given a mug full of boiling water with sugar in it, said Joanne Reynolds, prosecuting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court .

He was "very angry" and the prison door was shut after he was given the result of the interview with the governor.

Fraser kicked the door several times and shouted before the officer felt wet. The victim ended up with "redness and slight blistering on the neck, back and shoulder."

Miss Reynolds added: "He said that he did not intend to hit or injure any officers outside his cell but accepted he was responsible for the injuries caused."

Fraser pleaded guilty to the assault of a prison custody officer. He was given 16 weeks in custody and must pay the compensation.

Makhan Singh, mitigating, said the door was closed and Fraser threw the mug in anger. It was not aimed at any officer.

"It must have gone through a slit in the door near the hinges.

"The governor was not prepared to tell him how long he would be in the segregation unit. Not thinking, he threw the contents of the mug away. This was more out of frustration," said Mr Singh, who felt it was not a deliberate act.

District Judge Leo Pyle told Fraser: "The reality is he could be heard outside and clearly you were angry and threw the mug at the door.

"In terms of harm, this injury was caused by boiling water which scalded the officer and was extremely painful at the time."

He said that throwing the water was "equivalent to the use of a weapon."
