A Scottish prison officer’s vehicle has been torched in a horror arson attack.

Officers are probing whether the incident was a targeted attack against a member of staff at the maximum security nick in Lanarkshire.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: “We can confirm that a member of staff’s vehicle was set on fire in HMP Shotts’ car-park. No-one was injured.

“It was dealt with by the fire service and is now in the hands of the police.

“The vast majority of staff who work in the prison at the weekends are prison officers rather than civilian staff.”

“It is too early to say at this stage whether it was a targeted attack.”

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed officers were responding to an “incident” in the grounds of the prison and that investigations were ongoing.

He said: "About 7pm on Sunday 8th November 2020, police and fire services responded to reports of a vehicle on fire at Shotts Prison.

"The Fire was extinguished and police remain on the scene and enquiries are ongoing.

"No-one was injured."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed the incident happened on Sunday evening.

He said: “We were alerted to a vehicle fire at Shotts Prison at 6.35pm on Sunday and one appliance attended the incident.

“It is now a police matter.”
