Prison governors throw disco to celebrate first LGBT+ Pride celebration behind bars

Prison governors installed a glitter cannon and disco sound system for Britain’s first LGBT+ Pride celebration behind bars, it has been revealed.

Cons at maximum security HMP Full Sutton, Yorks – home to mass killer Jeremy Bamber and Sunderland Strangler Steven Grieveson – were also able to tuck in to rainbow cakes and take part in quizzes on LGBT+ history.

A prison source said: “We’d never seen anything like it in our lives. It was extraordinary.”

An inmate who uses the name Madisson Naylor – apparently after transitioning to a woman – wrote a letter to the prison magazine, saying: “I would like to say a big thank you to all prisoners and staff at Full Sutton for arranging the LGBT+ Pride event.

"It was the first time in five years that I have ever felt a part of something and made to feel welcome. All got into the spirit and were covered in glitter.

“I would finally like to thank the kitchen staff and prisoners for providing the rainbow cakes.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “An LGBT event was held at HMP Full Sutton – incurring no additional cost to the prison or taxpayer.”

A source added: “Each cake was made by prisoners themselves and had different coloured icing on.”
