Prison for Hartcliffe man who pummelled partner

A Hartcliffe man who pummelled his partner in a prolonged attack has been jailed. And a judge banned him from all contact with her.

Dean Chick had been issued with a domestic violence protection order regarding the complainant, which he breached. He was jailed by magistrates for 18 days as a result.

But Bristol Crown Court heard that after he was released, a week into July, he took the complainant to his dad's home and subjected her to a sustained assault that left her covered in bruises. Chick, 34, of Englishcombe Road, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breach of a non-molestation order.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair KC jailed him for 21 months. The judge told him: "It is important that serious offences like this are punished by the appropriate punishment. Domestic violence very often is particularly severe in its outcomes for those involved in it."

Chick was handed a five-year restraining order banning all contact with his victim. He was also banned from going to two areas of Bristol.

The court heard Chick took the woman to his father's home and assaulted her over several hours. She suffered bruising all over her body and suffered psychologically, the court heard.

Dianne Heys, defending, told the court: "He does express genuine remorse. He does accept full responsibility for his actions.

"He knows his behaviour was wholly inappropriate. There was harm caused."

Miss Heys described the relationship as volatile. She added: "He's willing to learn from his mistakes. He does have difficulties concerning drink and drugs. He had some alcohol on board (at the time)."

Miss Heys said her client had no wish to reoffend and no objection to the restraining order. She said he asked to be given an opportunity.
