Prison custody officer arrested at Airdrie Sheriff Court for allegedly selling drugs to prisoners

A prison custody officer was arrested at a Scottish court over claims he dealt drugs to prisoners .

John Barrett, 49, was cuffed after police showed up at Airdrie Sheriff Court to conduct searches.

The GEOAmey worker was arrested and charged with three drugs offences.

He appeared at Lanark Sheriff Court this week before being remanded into custody.

GEOAmey provides custody and prison escort services for jails across Scotland .

A source said: "Police carried out security searches of GEOAmey staff at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

"One guy was taken away."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: Police Scotland officers in conjunction with our partners in Criminal Justice carried out an operation at Airdrie Sheriff Court in which a number of searches were conducted relating to the misuse of illegal drugs.

"Throughout the operation Police Scotland officers and Criminal Justice partners worked to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone using the building.

"A 49 year old man has been arrested for Misuse of Drugs offences.

A GEOAmey spokesperson said: “Senior staff within GEOAmey worked alongside Police Scotland who conducted a search operation at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Wednesday morning.

"This resulted in the arrest of a GEOAmey employee.
