ATAMI, Shizuoka -- A month after a mudslide in this bayside resort city killed at least 22 people, commemorations were held Tuesday to remember the dead.
In the hard-hit downstream area of the Aizome River, Shizuoka Gov. Heita Kawakatsu and Atami Mayor Sakae Saito led a gathering in a moment of silence.
At Atami city hall, people present stood silently as a siren sounded for a minute from 10:28 a.m., the time the disaster struck, in memory of those who lost their lives. The whereabouts of five people remain unknown.
The same day, a prefectural government team started recovery work around the Aizome River, investigating damage caused to various infrastructure. The prefectural and city governments are also beginning full-scale efforts to restore residents' livelihoods.
In the disaster-hit Izusan district, 131 buildings were damaged and 299 evacuees are living in hotels in the city as of Monday. The prefectural government plans to build permanent public housing structures in the district.
