Princeton student jailed in Perth after losing appeal against one-punch sentence

Joshua Billington was taken into custody after the Court of Appeal dismissed his application.

A former US Ivy League college student guilty of an assault in Perth has been taken into custody after an appeal against his jail sentence was dismissed.

Joshua Robert Billington had pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm outside the Niche Bar in Leederville in August last year.

Mitch Davis was knocked to the ground in the one-punch assault, and suffered a concussion, a cut to his head and a brain bleed.

Billington was sentenced in January to nine months in prison, but immediately appealed against that sentence.

He was granted bail and returned to Princeton University in the United States to complete exams, before returning to Perth for the appeal hearing.

Billington's appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, and he was taken into custody in the courtroom.

He is eligible for parole.

Outside court after the hearing Mr Davis's father Tasman Crooke said he was glad the case had come to an end.

"Six court appearances and it's finally, I guess, got to the bottom line," he said.

"I guess it's saying that society doesn't really accept unwarranted thuggery like that so, it told a story.

"I hope Joshua has time to think about that.

"I'm sure he'll get through all that, he's a high achiever like my son Mitchell — he's onward and upward with his progression but Joshua has to think about that for a bit.

"I hope that sorts him out a bit better."

Mr Crooke said he had hoped Billington would issue a personal apology to his son, as opposed to the one given through his lawyers.

He said he hoped his son suffered no further health issues.

"He did have that slight bleed to his brain," Mr Crooke said.

"We don't want that to come back and haunt him in the future."
