Princess of Wales' nod to the Queen as she holds hands with daughter at state funeral while Meghan Markle also pays tribute

The Princess of Wales' used her appearance at the Queen's state funeral to pay a subtle tribute to her late grandmother-in-law. Catherine, who was given the title last held by her husband's mother Diana following King Charles' succession to the throne, attended Queen Elizabeth II's funeral on Monday (September 19).

Prince George and Princess Charlotte walked in between their parents behind the Queen’s coffin as part of a solemn procession through Westminster Abbey. Ahead of the service, Kate could be seen holding Charlotte’s hand, and giving her a reassuring touch on the shoulder.

As the young royals walked behind their great-grandmother’s coffin, Charlotte held her hands clasped in front of her while George had his arms by his side. It was announced before the Queen's funeral that the nine-year-old heir to the throne and his seven-year-old sister would gather with 2,000 people in Westminster Abbey, as millions watch the televised service across the globe.

The young royals were seen traveling in a car with the Prince William and Kate before they made their way to join the funeral procession at Westminster Abbey. There was then a change of arrangements as Kate joined Queen Consort Camilla in the short journey to the historic building.

Kate could be seen wearing the Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker alongside Bahrain Pearl Drop earrings. She paired the two pieces of jewellery with a wide-brimmed black hat and net veil.

This necklace includes four rows of pearls with a central diamond clasp in a curved shape, each side including three rows of diamonds that join at the top and bottom with marquise diamonds. It bares significance as in 2017, Queen Elizabeth II loaned the stunning piece of jewelry to Kate for the first time.

And it could also be seen as a nod to William's late mother, Diana, as in November 1982, the Queen famously loaned the same choker to her then new daughter-in-law to wear during a state visit from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

Kate also paired the necklace and earrings with a brooch that had once been worn by the Queen. The Princess first donned the brooch during a trip to Ypres, Belgium on a visit with William in 2017 - almost two decades after the Queen wore it on a visit to Seoul, South Korea in 1999.

Meghan Markle also attended the service alongside her husband, Prince Harry with both dressed all in black. She opted for a knee-length cape dress which she accessorised with a large black hat covering her hair which had been swept back into a bun and wore pointed court shoes.

She also paid her own tribute to the late monarch as she donned a pair of pearl and diamond earrings that were given to her by the late Queen.
