Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over a khon performance to honour the Chakri dynasty and celebrate 120 years of Thai-Russian diplomatic relations in St Petersburg next Wednesday.
The performance will take place at the 154-year-old Marinsky Threatre, according to Fine Arts Department chief Anandha Chuchoti.
Khon is a performance steeped in hundreds of years of tradition and national heritage and is a fitting tribute to the long-standing relations spanning over a century between the two countries, Mr Anandha said.
The princess will travel to Russia to preside over the 90-minute performance with Deputy Prime Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn representing the government in bringing the khon troupe consisting of 55 master performers to Russia.
The highlight of the performance, titled Phra Chakri Baramee Ying Fah, depicts the story of the Ramayana in which a kingship with righteous rule has blessed the people with happiness.
Culture Ministry inspector-general Tassachon Thepgumpanat said Thai-Russian diplomatic ties began with a visit by King Chulalongkorn to Russia in 1897.
The two countries have reciprocated high-level visits since.
In July 2007, Her Majesty the Queen made a state visit to Russia to mark the 110th year of diplomatic ties.
