Princess Hisako, the widow of the late Prince Takamado, visited a special exhibition titled "Masterpieces of Japanese Art: From Sesshu and Eitoku to Korin and Hokusai" at Tokyo National Museum in Taito Ward, Tokyo, on Tuesday.
The exhibition showcases 41 artworks including five national treasures, such as byobu folding screens "Cypress Trees" painted by Kano Eitoku, and ink painting "Autumn and Winter Landscapes" drawn by Sesshu Toyo, as well as 14 important cultural assets.
Princess Hisako looked carefully at the byobu folding screens titled "Chinese Lions," the right screen of which was painted by Kano Eitoku and the left screen of which was painted by his great-grandchild, Tsunenobu. "The brushwork is totally different," she said.
The special exhibition, which runs until June 2, is part of the Tsumugu Project: Promoting, Restoring and Preserving the Beauty of Japan's Art, which is jointly organized by the Cultural Affairs Agency, the Imperial Household Agency and The Yomiuri Shimbun.
