Princess Diana's wedding dress to go on display at Kensington Palace for first time in decades

The dress that Princess Diana wore on her wedding day is to go on display at Kensington Palace for the first time in decades.

Prince William and Prince Harry have donated the dress designed by Welsh fashion designer David Emanuel to the Historic Royal Palaces as part of a new temporary exhibition.

The silk taffeta bridal gown will go on display at the Royal Style In The Making on June 3 at the historic and newly restored Orangery.

The exhibition will showcase some of the most iconic royal couture, with Princess Diana's wedding gown the stand out piece.

The dress's style with its billowing sleeves and deep ruffles was popularised by the princess in the early 1980s.

The dress was last on display at Kensington Palace in 1995 before being displayed at her childhood home, Althorp.

The famous silhouette is made up of a fitted bodice and layers of stiff petticoats which make up the skirt. It also has panels of antique Carrickmacross lace which originally belonged to Queen Mary, as well as 10,000 mother of pearl sequins.

The 25ft sequin encrusted train, the longest in royal history, will also feature in the exhibition.

Matthew Storey, exhibition curator at Historic Royal Palaces, said while Diana's dress will be the showcase attraction, there will be some "real surprises" for fashion fans, reports SkyNews.

Also featured in the exhibition will be the never-before-seen surviving toil for the 1937 coronation dress of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

It features golden national emblems which embody continuity at the start of the unexpected reign of George VI, following the abdication of Edward VIII.

The exhibition will run until January 2022.
