Princess Diana's warning to four-year-old William about future in the public eye

As we've discovered this week courtesy of Meghan and Harry's in-depth interview with Oprah Winfrey, life in the public eye can be pretty challenging at times.

Being a member of the Royal Family comes with its own rules and obligations and a part of that involves spending a lot of time in front of cameras, being on your "A-game", as Harry put it.

The vast amount of attention that comes with the role is something Princess Diana warned her sons about from a very early age.

According to the princes' former bodyguard Ken Wharfe, Diana shared some words of wisdom about life in the public eye and what was expected with William when he was just four-years-old, on his very first day of school.

Speaking to Yahoo's Royal Box, Wharfe claimed Diana gave William some advice in the car on the way to Wetherby School in 1987 to prepare him for the media that would greet them.

He recalled: "Diana said to him in the car, 'when you get to school there are going to be lots of media and lots of photographers, you've got to behave yourself. You're going to get this for the rest of your life'."

But it seems Prince William wasn't very impressed with his mum's speech and instead decided to be rather cheeky when he got out of the car.

Wharfe added: "William turned around and said something which was extraordinary. He said: 'Don't like 'tographers'."

Prince William's first day of school was very different from that of his children's, with noticeably fewer people present.

As part of their plan to give their little ones as 'normal' an upbringing as possible, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made it as private as they could for Prince George and Princess Charlotte by inviting just a few select members of the media.

The children both attend Thomas Battersea Preparatory School in London.
